Lavender

I started these two English lavender plants from seed last year. They spent the winter next to the garage. It turns out that this was the best place for them.

Gardening is a story of successes and failures. As I try new things each year I learn from my mistakes. This time my mistake was to winter over most of the lavender seedlings in the veg garden. That soil turned out to be too wet for their liking.

Lavender plants have been transplanted into this well drained strip of soil on the south side of the garage.

For those who know lavender well you may notice a few problems in this planting. First, the plants are too close together. Second, there is very lttle green showing on many of these plants. I decided to start them close (they should be 24” apart) because I have a feeling many of them may not survive. I also have extra plants so I might as well give them a chamce. You never know.

The lavender joined a group of blooroot I move into this soil last year.

Here is another example of a plant that may be in the wrong spot. The hot, sunny, well drained soil is not ideal for bloodroot. They did have beautiful flowers last year and seem ready to flower again this spring, so I guess this can’t be too bad a spot. For now anyway.
