Transition Time

In the middle of April the cold frame was full of early season seedlings.

This is the time of the season when plants are being transitioned from the greenhouse to the cold frame and then eventually on to the open garden. the plants that were in the cold frame in mid April are now growing well in the open garden.

Broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce are some of the early crops that have gone from the cold frame to the garden.
The next group of seedlings to go into the garden are hardening off in the cold frame.

Different crops can tolerate different temperature ranges. This is a topic I used to teach about in the Environmental Science course. The second wave of plants to go into the cold frame include sweat pea, Swiss chard, arugula, escarole, spinach, and the flower alyssum.

It ranges from 60 at night to 85 in the day in the greenhouse.

The greenhouse is still quite full of the plants that are less able to withstand cool temperatures. tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, petunias and many more are growing well and in another week will be taking up their place in the cold frame to harden off. By June first the outside nighttime temperatures should be warm enough so that all of the plants can grow well in the ope garden.

  1. If I read correctly you used an all purpose 10/10/10 fertilizer and then added osmicote slow release fertilizer. That’s not too much?
