Vegetable Garden Update

Since the title of this blog is Vegetable Garden, I decided to post an update on how the plants are doing in the vegetable gardens. Be prepared for lots of pictures but not too much text. There are a lot. Good luck!

Tat Soi. It is near to bolting (going to flower) and needs to be eaten soon.

Pole beans (lima and fortex) just transplanted into the soil by two new bean towers.

Arugula. It is starting to flower so it needs to be harvested soon.

Escarole. Some are tall and some are are short. I don’t know why.

Brussels sprouts. Jade Cross. They are growing well but I. think I planted them too close to one another. I may have to try to transplant them to spread them out.

Corn. There are twelve plants each of Incredible, (a long season corn)and Quickie, (a short season corn.)

Potatoes, Red Norland. There are four short rows of these. They are an early red potato.

Kale, Lacinato. (Also known as dinosaur kale). These appear to be planted too close. I will try to find a home for the one in the middle somewhere else.

Purple top turnips. They have a short season so I have a tall zinnia in the middle to take their place when they are harvested.

Ruby Swiss chard. One meal’s worth.

Spinach, Space. It’s ready to go for supper tonight. It is amazing how all of this will boil down to two modest servings.

Oregon Sugar Pod Peas. They are growing up the trellis nicely.

Summer squash. Butter Belly. There is also a Zephyr summer squash and a Black Beauty zucchini growing too but they are all small right now.

Green cabbage, Earliana in the foreground; Red Cabbage, Red Express in the background. Shallots in the corners. The two amaryllis plants will be nestled in between for their summer residence.

Buttercrunch and Igloo lettuces. The buttercrunch is at it’s peak right now.

Carrots, Envy and Royal Chanteney. Radishes have been harvested from this bed already and the carrots have just been thinned to one plant every two to four inches.

Lettuce seedlings on the right. Beets in the middle. Bok choi on the left.

Italian large leaf basil. It is still young. It needs heat and sun to grow well.

Acadia and Gypsy broccoli with beets in the corner and leeks along the side.

Cheddar Cauliflower with beets in the corner and onions along the side.

Tomatillos. These plants were a gift from our friend Priscilla. I have never grown them before. They may grow to the top of the greenhouse roof!

Sweet peppers. King Arthur, Big Red, Cal Wonder and Red Skin. There were planted in the greenhouse soil today. The greenhouse bench that was here went to the attic and the plants in trays are on a table in the center.

Tomatoes. Sungold, Super Sweet 100, Early Girl, Brandywine, Ten Fingers of Napoli, Coustralee and a new one Tonopah. There are petunias stored between them until I build a plant container to go on the deck for them.
