At first glance, the Reliance peach tree in this picture looks fairly normal. It is loaded down with peaches and has a bit of color with daylillys blooming underneath. But there is a problem.

At closer examination the leaves look wilted and the branch seems unusually burdened down with a modest crop of peaches. Upon looking further up the branch answers the question.

Last year a large branch on this tree simply died. I had to cut the dead branch off early this spring. Now this large branch has broken under the weight of the peaches growing on it. There is still a little bit of a branch connection and the leaves have not completely died and dried up so maybe there is hope to salvage the peaches from this branch this year. But then it will have to go. The only branches left don’t seem to make up much of a tree. What to do? I planted this tree in 1977, the summer after we moved into our house. So there is a bit of nostalgia involved in this descision. It has produced a wonderfull crop of peaches almost every year since 1980. We do have a dwarf Reliance peach tree planted and fruiting, but still, this is an old favorite of ours. Well, nothing lasts forever.

I constantly have a fight with myself when I know something’s past its prime and looking peeked, but it has sentimental atachments. Good luck with your peaches!
