It’s July 13th and it’s raining again. As with most things, there is the good and the bad of it. The good is that the gardens are being well watered and many of the plants are responding with beautiful blooms. The vegetables are doing well too. Here are some pictures to illustrate.
Dahlias. Four of five varieties. I overwintered these tubers and gave them an early start in the greenhouse. The new dahlia I bought this spring is growing well but is behind the others in blooming. It will catch up.
The annuals in the flower boxes have been beaten down by the rain but should perk up. The tradescantia (inch plant or wandering jew) is a nice addition to the flower pots on the deck this summer. This Jackmani clematis somehow escaped the nibbling of the rabbits.
We have to duck to avoid the wet Japanese maple foliage as we walk on this path but it does provide a colorful screen. The elephant ears by the bird bath are a new addition this year. When the hummingbirds chase each other back and forth fighting over the feeder, sometimes they fly in and around the elephant ears. I am amazed by their flying ability every day. Every year the mullein pinks come up wherever their seeds have landed and we are thankful for them.
I keep referring to the perennial garden as derelict, but it has given so much color this year (amongst the weeds) that I should probably be kinder in my description. In June the irises and poppies put on a show and now the gloriosa daisies, daylilies and heliopsis are taking their turn.
